The Story
Before the road, before the fish market, the name already existed — and it described the land rather than the people on it.
Elders in the village trace the name to a feature of the shoreline that has since eroded. The word survives; the landscape it described does not.
Recording these etymologies matters because coastal change is fast here. When the last speakers who remember the reasoning are gone, the name becomes a sound without a source.
