The Ninki Nanka Trail

Experience1–7 days River Gambia, The GambiaMandinka, Wolof, English

Journey up the River Gambia with the communities who live beside it — boats, birds, village stays and the legend the river is named after.

The Ninki Nanka Trail is a community-led journey along the River Gambia, named after the river creature of Gambian folklore. You travel the way the river asks you to: slowly, by boat and on foot, from the coastal creeks toward the villages and wetlands upriver.

Local guides lead every leg. You sleep in community-run lodges and riverside camps, eat with host families, and hear the river's stories — its folklore, its history and its ecology — from the people who keep them.

Packages range from a single day on the water to multi-day journeys upriver, and you can join at different points along the trail. A share of every booking stays with the households and villages hosting.

Her African Culture lists the trail as a cultural experience linked to the Ninki Nanka folklore record. Departures, pricing and full itineraries are managed by the trail's operator.
